nuclear free zone Badenyon.org is a nuclear-free zone. nuclear free zone

The UK government has announced an intention to replace the ageing and irrelevant trident D2 nuclear weapons system. This is a disaster for us all.

See the Faslane365 website for the latest on resistance to the UK's weapons of mass destruction.

Mark recently (06Feb2007) wrote to the scientific journal Nature following their publishing a news item and an editorial that criticised the UK government for not involving scientists in the debate about renewal versus refurbishment, but failing to mention the idea that the end of Trident is a good time to give up on the UK system altogether, and go nuclear-free. They may or may not publish it... A copy of the letter is here.

Mark went with his academic colleagues from round the world to Faslane on 07 January 2007 for a seminar and blockade of the base.
Over 80 people listened to impassioned and well argued talks on the economics, ethics and politics of Trident and its replacement. Mark made a short presentation on Biodiversity. We closed the North gate of Faslane for 5 and a half hours before being arrested for 'breaching the peace'.
During the blockade, we made a scratch performance of Will. Shakespeare's 'The Tempest', with extemporised additions and mutations of the text:

"Some are born nuclear free,
some achieve nuclear freedom,
and some (will) have nuclear freedom thrust upon them

Hey nonny no, &c"

Photos of the action are available at the faslane365 website as well.

There's comment and discussion at http://www.acronym.org.uk/uk/index.htm

Chris Booth has been actively singing down trident: see him with such august company as Roy Bailey and Billy Bragg (and many other writers and singers).
